Why are pirates portrayed negative

The reason why pirate is always the bad, smelly guy is because of official propaganda.

Kingdoms were oppressive countries and if you wanted to live free sometimes your only option was to became a pirate.

The official propaganda had to portray pirates as smelly and negative, and the obedient soldier of Her Majesty as the handsome and brave guy that always gets the beauty.

While the reality was that he got a bullet. That was his job to serve. And often to die. And what better way to enslave a man than to convince him that he will get a better women by being a better slave.
